How to enlarge a skirt

I should say - how I enlarged a skirt.

For my sister's wedding in July I was given a skirt to wear. My sister wanted everyone to match, so it was a great idea. Then we found out that I would be 4 1/2 months pregnant and the dress wouldn't fit.

So my wonderful mom and I tried to come up with some solutions. The first solution was mine and it didn't work very well. I thought I'd take the elastic out or just add a bit more. I didn't realize that the elastic was sewn onto the fabric instead of just in a casing. I couldn't unpick and add more.

I then asked my mom for her help. She asked if we could put 2 skirts together. We got another skirt, but with the magic of the internet we found that it was not only a foot shorter than the original, it was also a different shade of yellow. So this wasn't going to work at all. Luckily my sister needed one and it worked for her.

Our next idea? open the elastic and just add more. there will be a gap because it won't be sewn on, but I'm not worried about that now. I just hope that all will be well by the time we get there. I cut the seam about 4 inches and added in the wide elastic. I sewed a lot of zig zags over the seams where the elastic met the fabric.

I am proud of my work. You don't see the white because it's covered by my shirt. The sad part is that I didn't think about getting any pictures of me that day - so hopefully we'll get one when we get the prints from my sister. :)  It worked well and I got a lot of compliments on it. Oh happy day!

UPDATE:

All the sisters. I think my skirt worked great.
And with the shirt you can barely tell I was pregnant.
